On March 16th 2006, the South Florida Chapter of ASPA and 90 attendees were present to honor former Miami-Dade County Commission Chairperson
Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler as part of the Chapter's third annual Women's History Month celebration. Dr. Shuler received an award commemorating over 25 years of public service. She encouraged involvement in ASPA and pledged her support for the 2009 National ASPA Conference to be held in Miami, Florida. View Photos. - March 29
On Wednesday, March 29 2006, the South Florida Chapter hosted Miami-Dade County School Board Chairman Augustin J. Barrera at our monthly luncheon. Chairman Barrera explained that the Miami-Dade County School system has 351,000 students and a budget of $5.6 billion. Miami-Dade Public Schools is the fourth largest system in the United States behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The biggest challenge that Miami-Dade Schools faces is educational funding and the need for additional classroom space. The School Board is currently working on increasing teachers' salaries to remain competitive nationwide. Also present was fellow Miami-Dade School Board member, Evelyn Greer who answered additional questions from the audience later on in the program. View Photos.
