The Public Manager

The Public Manager is the official journal of the Section on Certified Public Management. Beginning with the spring 2008 edition, the journal will be published in full color and the size of the journal will increase by 50 percent to 96 pages. Additional advertising by carefully selected supporters of public administration helped to facilitate this expansion, which will include more in-depth forums and coverage of state, local, nonprofit, and international best practices. The journal’s subscription base now includes more than 10,000 members of the public administration community.

The journal’s revamped Web site now includes a private members area with access to an electronic version of the journal as well as more than 2,500 archived articles from past issues. The public area contains book reviews, highlights and abstracts from the current issue, links to original works from which articles have been excerpted, and links to the journal’s affiliates.

Volume 37, Issue 1 (Spring 2008) is now available!

TPM Extends Invitation to SCPM Members

The Public Manager invites SCPM members to submit articles for a forthcoming issue:

The new ASPA Section on Certified Public Management promises to be an excellent vehicle for promoting quality educational and professional development programs for practitioners across the country. In addition to offering high quality CPM seminars, workshops, and conferences, another way to encourage improved skills and applied strategies is through publication of best practice articles in the Section’s official practitioner journal – The Public Manager.

How can our community of practice improve performance in such areas as: ethics and accountability, performance measurement, financial management and stewardship, citizen engagement, customer service, human capital management, emergency management, e-government, and other topics?

I invite all Section members to submit an article (or e-forum idea) based on your presentation for publication in The Public Manager – probably starting with the fall issue (deadline August 1, 2008). If there's enough interest and you like, we could cobble together a mini-forum from time to time and publish a number of articles (or e-forum) as an ensemble piece – perhaps aiming for the winter 2008 issue. And for academic members, we also offer a double-blind peer review, if that's helpful.

Again, I’m happy to be a part of this applied venture, and I wish the new Section and its founding father, Howard Balanoff, lots of success during its inaugural year. Please let me know if you’re interested in sharing your best practice ideas with other practitioners.

All the best,

Warren Master
