ASPA’s Section for
Certified Public Management
About Us
ASPA’s Section for Certified Public Management (SCPM) was approved by the ASPA National Council in December 2007. The CPM Section was established to provide a home for ASPA members interested in the concepts and principles related to the certification of public managers.
Initially, students, alumni, faculty and administrators from the Texas Certified Public Manager (CPM) Program plus a selected group of ASPA members familiar with the CPM concept formed the nucleus of the Section. Since 2007, students, alumni and faculty from CPM Programs across the country have joined, as well as other ASPA members with a strong interest in the professional development and education of managers. The creation of the CPM Section is consistent with ASPA’s broader goals that seek to promote the development of ethical and productive managers in the public and nonprofit sectors and, too, with the aims of the National Consortium of Certified Public Managers.
The overarching goal of the Section on Certified Public Management is to conduct activities that promote quality public administration education activities and professional development programs through ASPA’s Chapters, related Sections and its national, regional and state conferences. Among the major activities of the ASPA CPM Section have been:
• Sponsorship of a half-
• Adoption of The Public Manager as the SCPM Journal (from 2008 – present)
• Sponsorship of the annual Texas ASPA/CPM Annual Conference, which is normally held in Austin, San Marcos and Round Rock Texas (from 2008 – present)
ASPA’s Section for Certified Public Management promotes conferences similar to the Texas/ASPA Conference around the country. For example, the State of Florida adopted the Texas model. The Section works with the Florida ASPA chapters to promote statewide and local professional and educational conferences for managers. One of the Section’s major efforts is to recruit CPM alumni, students, faculty etc. from CPM Programs across the country into ASPA. This will be a continuous activity. CPM Directors from around the Country are given information about ASPA and encouraged to sign up their CPM alumni, students and faculty.
