Call to order: President 6:05

 

Attendance: Karen Bune, Gene Bacher, George Hohmann, Lewis Vasser, Cathy Wiltse,

 

Minutes of previous meeting: Deferred pending a quorum.

 

Financial report: Required data and forms are completed to submit to National ASPA that will qualify us for the annual rebate.  We are still expecting to receive about $1500.  Rebate plus current assets just about cover expected expenses.  Fiscal restraint is indicated.  

 

Old business/reports:

 

            Press Conference for High School Newspaper Editors: Thursday, November 13, 4:00 PM, Fairfax Economic Development Authority, 8300 Boone Boulevard, Suite 450, Vienna, VA 22182.  The phone number is 703.790.0600.  The website address is: http://www.fairfaxcountyeda.org.  The listings of high schools were divided among the attendees.  Gene will forward the article that appeared in last year’s PA Times to all Council members as background.  Council members willing help contact newspaper advisors and editors should contact Gene.  Conference topic is “Careers in Public Service.”  Panel members will include Karen Bune, Martha Reid, someone from the Economic Development Authority, and someone from the Fairfax County Police (Karen to contact).  Pizza and soda will be served.  Karen will contact local papers for coverage as we successfully did last year. 

 

            Brady Howell Scholarship:  Proposed to be $750 and no Spring scholarship.  Proposed topic of 1000 word essay: “Does recall serve a useful purpose in a democratic election process.”  Final decision to be made by email and announcements sent to GMU, Virginia Tech, Marymount, and others as proposed by Council Members.  Essays due by November 20.  We need a council member to volunteer to receive and process the applications/essays.

 

            Homeland Security Event proposed by Ashley Moore: Deferred pending more information and concept.

 

“The Gangs of Northern Virginia” Event.  Tentatively planned for the spring.  Concept is to bring together public administrators from local jurisdictions to share approaches and knowledge.

 

Membership:  Letters have been sent to five local officials inviting them to join ASPA.  New members letter is being drafted by Carolyn.  

 

Due to the need to coordinate final plans for the Press Conference, it was proposed the date for the next meeting be move up.  New agreed date is Monday, November 3, 6 PM, Beacon Street.  Ann is to make reservations.
