American Society for Public Administration

Location: Beacon Street Café

MINUTES

-Call to order at 6:18 p.m.

-Present:  Bacher, Bune, Ellis, Hohmann, Ludwick, Wiltse

-Minutes of previous meetings – tabled until next meeting and pending a quorum

-Financial report – Current total balance is $1575.04; $1758 rebate to be mailed directly to treasurer

-Announcements from President – One free one-year membership offer is still available.  Ideas were shared about how best to promote this opportunity.  It was decided to use as a recruitment tool as a new council nomination.

Old business/reports:

-Spring Event “Herrity Speaker” – what happened? – Due to confusion at the Fairfax campus that evening with the John Kerry event, our speaker was

unable to attend.  On a positive note, the “model” was successful, participants still enjoyed the reception, and it generated some interest in new membership.

-Spring Event “The Gangs of Northern Virginia” – We decided on a title for this event, “Developing Public Policy in Response to Northern Virginia Gang

Activity.”  Subsequent to the meeting, target date was revised to Thursday April 8.  Confirmation is pending receipt of approval from the VA Dept of Corrections Commissioner to

allow the speakers to participate.  Dave Ellis indicated that Sharon Bulova or a representative might be good to invite as a participant as she has been

involved in action plans and community meetings on the subject.  Ellis also agreed to contact Gerry Connolly.  Gene Bacher will contact a member of the

PTA.  Karen Bune will contact the Attorney General’s Office.

-Homeland Security Event – To be considered in the fall

-Public Service Recognition Week –May 3-9, 2004 – Ideas were discussed to celebrate this week at Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William county exec’s

Offices.  Ideas included: to make a giveaway basket with balloons to station at each exec’s office, to set up a table in front of the govt buildings to hand out

giveaways in the morning.  Ellis will look at Board schedules; Cathy Wiltse will research cost of giveaways, Public Employees Roundtable, and a possible

activity at the Town of Herndon.  Ludwick is planning a public service career panel – target date of May 3.

Committee Reports:

·        Banquet – George Hohmann – The Alpine has been reserved on Thursday, June 17 with a start time of 6:30 p.m.  Please consider buffet or sit down style to discuss at March meeting.  George will bring a breakout of last year’s costs.  Also think about keynote speakers.

·        Elections – Ann Ludwick – A timeline was proposed by Ludwick: Mail ballots in mid April with a return date of early May.  Count ballots (three council members present) at May 12 council meeting.  Invite new council to participate in the June banquet.  Maintain the current ballot procedure.

·        Membership – Cathy Wiltse – Shared idea of giveaways to target professors in class to generate student interest.

New Business

The council approved the expenditure of $100 to support George Mason’s MPA visit to Capitol Hill.

Next meeting was changed to March 17.
