  • On October 24, 2008, Metropolitan Louisville ASPA hosted a community reception that featured U.S. Congressman John Yarmuth as the keynote speaker. The goal of the event was to foster networking opportunities between students, faculty, and practitioners working in the fields of public affairs in Louisville. Also, UofL's Department of Public Affairs doctoral students Joshua D. Ambrosius and Matt Hanka received an award for winning our annual student paper competition in public affairs. As pictured, US Congressman John Yarmuth was also given an honorary lifetime membership to the local association by Dr. Leonard Bright (Metro Louisville ASPA President) on behalf of the association.
 

  • The Metropolitan Louisville American Society for Public Administration (Metro Louisville ASPA) is hosting a reception with U.S. Congressman John Yarmuth on Friday, October 24, 2008 from 6-7:30 pm at the University Club. This is a great opportunity to hear the priorities of our Congressman, as well as network with others involved in public service.  Admission is $3 for students, $5 for the general public, and free for ASPA members.   • Metro Louisville ASPA has announced its 2008 student paper competition.  We seek graduate student papers that address topics in public affairs, such as public administration, non-profit organizations, leadership, economic development, human resource management, urban governance, workforce development, and public budgeting. The papers will be judged in terms of topic relevance, originality, writing quality, and contribution to the field of public affairs.  The winners will receive a plaque of recognition, paid admission to Louisville’s 2009 SECOPA conference, and a monetary award of $100.  Deadline: October 6th, 2008.  Click here for more information.

  • Metro Louisville ASPA's business meeting was held on April 4, 2008.  It was reported that the association is in good financial condition which can  attributed to the steady growth of our membership base.  The Board also unanimously reappointed Kevin Connelly and elected Leah Pepper and Melody Mayes as new board members for the 2008-2010 terms.  Leah and Melody will replace the outgoing Chris Brown and Hank Savitch.  Join us in congratulating these new incoming members and thanking our outgoing members for their contributions to the association.  The minutes for this meeting are available. 

  • The SeCoPA 2009 Planning Team held their first meeting on April 2, 2008. The members of the planning team include Leonard Bright, Christina Bright, Kevin Connelly, Jana Goemmer, Victoria Gordon, Ed Jennings, Jo Ann Ewalt, John Ralston, and Elizabeth Senn-Alvery. The tentative theme of the conference is "The Race for the Roses: Winning Moves in Public Administration".  The conference is scheduled to be held at the Marriott Louisville Downtown Hotel from September 30-October 3, 2009If you would like to participate, please contact us. 

 
  • Metro Louisville ASPA is hosting a panel on "Public Service Leadership" on Wednesday, April 9th from 6:00-7:30pm in the University of Louisville Ekstrom Library, Chao Auditorium.  The panel members will include: J. Barry Barker, Executive Director, Transit Authority of River City, Tom Burch, 30th District Kentucky State Representative, Cathe Dykstra, Executive Director, Project Women, and Denise Troutman, Director, The Center for Women and Families.  Click here for more information.

  • Southeastern Conference for Public Administration (SeCoPA) will be held in Orlando, Florida September 24-27, 2008.

 

 

  • Metro Louisville ASPA 2007 Mayor's Reception held November 9, 2007 was a big success.  Approximately 100 students, faculty, and practitioners were in attendance.  Mayor Jerry Abramson was the Keynote speaker.  The Mayor highlighted the importance of public service work to the community and encouraged those in attendance to get involved with the association.  He was also given an honorary lifetime membership from Dr. Bright on behalf of the association.  Click for more pictures from the event.

  • Elizabeth McConnell's paper entitled "U.S. Federal Government and Employers Enforcing Immigration Law" was selected as the winner of Metro Louisville ASPA's 2007 Student Paper Competition. (Click here to read the paper). She was recognized at the Metro Louisville ASPA 2007 Mayor's Reception with a plague of recognition from Dr. Koven on behalf of the association. She will also receive a $100 stipend, and a free 1-year ASPA membership.

 

 

  • Metro Louisville ASPA was recently approved to host the 2009 Southeastern Conference for Public Administration (SeCoPA) Conference in Louisville on September 30-October 3rd, 2009.  The conference is expected to bring approximately 300 practitioners, faculty, and students from around the world.  A conference planning committee is being developed to organize this conference.  If you would like to participate, please contact us.
