The Business Ethics Training and Development: Training and Development Approaches
Robert A. Giacalone

Some organizations have benevolently tried to sell employees on ethics, forced them to endure long, ethical training sessions that are of little practical utility, and implied that their ethics are questionable. If corporate America wants to instill ethics, a more holistic approach is needed. Business leaders often become entangled in the training process itself. The singular focus on their own perspectives leads to a failure to take into account the peculiarities and ethical quandaries that are often specific to an industry, a profession, or an organizational culture. They toil at doing an admirable and competent job at training the basics, while letting employees struggle with trying to "apply it themselves". This is not only frustrating for employees who feel lost in the obscurities of philosophical thought, but is a waste of money due to the lack of relevance with the job that they actually do. About the Author - Robert A. Giacalone is the Surtman Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the Belk College of Business Administration.

Media Ethics Goes to the Movies
Praeger Publishers; 3/30/2002; ISBN: 0-275-97081-7; 208 pages.
Howard Good , Michael J. Dillon

Certain films seem to encapsulate perfectly the often abstract ethical situations that confront the media, from truth-telling and sensationalism to corporate control and social responsibility. Using these movies--including Ace in the Hole, All the President's Men, Network, and Twelve Angry Men--as texts, authors Howard Good and Michael Dillon demonstrate that, when properly framed and contextualized, movies can be a powerful lens through which to examine media practices. Moreover, cinema can present human moral conduct for evaluation and analysis more effectively than a traditional case study can. By presenting ethical dilemmas and theories within a dramatic framework, Media Ethics Goes to the Movies offers a unique perspective on what it means for media professionals to be both technically competent and morally informed.

Can We Teach Ethics?
Praeger Publishers; 2/16/1989; ISBN: 0-275-92857-8; 162 pages Howard B. Radest

This thought-provoking study examines the foundations of moral education from a philosophical and practical perspective. It analyzes some of the typical expectations that cannot be met in the present day approach, and recommends that the teaching of ethics be treated with `theater' as the metaphor, dialogue as the genre, and Socrates as the model. Seen as a necessary and unavoidable classroom activity, moral education is presented from a humanist point of view.

The Curricular Integration of Ethics: Theory and Practice
C. David Lisman
Praeger Publishers; 3/30/1996; ISBN: 0-275-95304-1; 192 pages.

Integrating ethics across the curriculum is one of the ways to help get students re-engaged with society. Review: The greatest strength pf this book is that it is interdisciplinary.... The author argues that integrating ethics in discipline-appropriate ways adds to, not detracts from, the teaching and learning of ethics.... The book is a must read for educators serious about teaching ethics. Reading the book challenged me to be reflective about my own teaching, and I will undoubtedly revisit Lisman's ideas when I plan future classes, regardless of topic. - Journal of Mass Media Ethics.

The Profession of Public Administration: An Ethics Edge in Introductory Textbooks?
Public Administration Review; Washington; Mar/Apr 2001
James S Bowman; Evan M Berman; Jonathan P West

Given the substantial interest in public service ethics, this study examines its foundations as reflected in paradigmatic textbooks - a unit of analysis that informs both theory and practice in the field. The interpretative framework employed evaluates the context (the amount and placement of the topic, the use of graphics, and sources cited) as well as the content (conceptualization of management ethics and inclusion of implementation issues) of ethics found in the publications. A limited definition of a professional - on in possession of largely technical skills - is reflected in the textbooks. The implications of the findings are explored.

Cheating In Schools
From Talk of the Nation, Monday, May 21, 2001

GUESTS: Louis Bloomfield, Professor of Physics, University of Virginia Don McCabe; Founding President, Center for Academic Integrity, Duke University; Professor of Management Studies, Rutgers University Thomas Hall; Senior at the University of Virginia; Chair of the University of Virginia Honor Committee.

Advances in technology have changed he way students learn, and in some cases, how they cheat. Experts say the number of students turning in term papers downloaded from the internet is on the rise. But technology is also helping professors weed out cheaters in the classroom. And new computer programs are helping to find plagiarists. Is cheating on the rise in colleges?

Mistakes in Teaching Ethics
Aerospace Power Journal; Summer 1998; 8 pages
Dr. James H. Toner

Author presents his personal views in the form of six "mistakes" he has identified occurring in the teaching of ethics. Dr. Toner is a professor of international relations and military ethics at the Air War College, Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Although his students are military personnel and his examples from that domain, the "mistakes" he presents translate easily to civilian life and teaching. First two "mistakes" discussed, for example, are: (1) "People entering our forces today already have the power of ethical judgment. We do not have to reinvent the ethical wheel; and (2) "Our task as teachers of military ethics is to impart some sense of order, some overarching scheme of discipline, the ethical sense and awareness that already exist".
