Seattle Ethics & Elections Commission
One of the missions of The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission is to administer, interpret and enforce the Seattle Code of Ethics, Seattle Municipal Code Chapter 4.16 (SMC 4.16). The Code provides a standard of conduct for all City officers and employees, which includes all elected and appointed officials, all City employees, and members of boards and commissions, paid and unpaid. The Code does not apply to Public Development Corporations or ad hoc advisory committees.
The Commission conducts investigations into allegations such as use of facilities for private gain, use of position to acquire a personal benefit and conflicts of interest in performing official duties.

This training package is designed to help local government leaders and staff explore ethics issues together. Using case studies, exercises, real local government examples, and mini lectures, the training package addresses how all staff can make ethical decisions all the time and how to build and maintain an ethical local government. The first module introduces participants to ethics concepts and can be customized to include your local government's codes, policies, and procedures. This module can also be incorporated into new employee orientation and other courses. Modules 2 and 3 present an ethical decision-making model to help local government staff make ethical decisions. The Ethics Edge Evan M. Berman, Jonathan P. West, and Stephen J. Bonczek, editors
A collection of the best articles available covering contemporary insights and current ideas on management practice in ethics. First is a refresher in the principles and values that underlie ethical codes and guide ethical decision making--such as integrity, trustworthiness, and fairness. Next is an examination of ways ethics can be implemented in the organization. Starting with an overview of the causes and types of unethical behavior, the articles explain how to conduct ethics assessments, increase ethical awareness, provide ethics training, and enforce ethics rules. The book examines the ethics frontiers: ethics implications of public entrepreneurship, ethics conflicts in contracting, and ethical use of the Internet and other information technologies. It explores the ethical issues that are particularly troubling for appointed city/county managers, such as political activity, severance agreements, and dual-career families with potential conflicts of interest. Practical Mgmt. Series Paperback. 1998. Hard Copy . 246 pages. ISBN: 0-87326-161-5, Item 42330 $24.95
