Business Ethics
Business Ethics from NPR Radio
from Weekend Edition - Sunday, Sunday, August 11, 2002

The indictments brought against Samuel D. Waksal of ImClone for insider trading and other charges raise the question of what kind of ethics are driving some of America's top executives. Host Liane Hansen talks with Joseph Badaracco, who teaches business ethics at the Harvard Business School. He discusses some of the traits found in people under stress and how he uses examples from literature of how people perform when confronted with a crisis. (5:58)

How Should We Clean Up the Mess on Wall Street?
By Norman Markowitz. Mr. Markowitz is an associate professor of history at the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University and a writer for the History News Service.

In the heyday of the Robber Barons in the 1870s, Cornelius Vanderbilt bluntly asked a critic, "Do I care about the law? Aint I got the power?" A decade later, his son, William K. Vanderbilt shouted back those who condemned his activities as against the public interest, "The public be damned." Although they now consult both public relations advisors and attorneys before issuing statements, the CEOs at our transnational firms like of Enron, WorldCom, and Global Crossings in our "deregulated "economy have long practiced what both Vanderbilts preached more than a century ago.

By Bob Batchelor
Mr. Batchelor is the author of the new book, The 1900s (Greenwood). For more information, please see his Web site at www.BobBatchelor.com.

In the early years of the twentieth century, businesses in the United States were transformed into "big business" as a tidal wave of thousands of companies were merged into large trusts that sought to squelch competition. For instance, the nation's first billion dollar corporation, United States Steel, brought together by financier J.P. Morgan, was a conglomeration of 213 manufacturing companies, including 41 mines, and owned more than 1,000 miles of railroad track and 112 ore ships. As a result, U.S. Steel accounted for 60 percent of the nation's steel making output and 43 percent of its pig iron capacity.
